Squeeing like a rabid fangirl

  • May. 12th, 2008 at 12:52 PM

On Friday I received the good news that not only did ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE make the New York Times, Borders, and USA Today bestseller list, it also debuted at # 11 on the Publisher's Weekly bestseller list. This, of course, I thought was way cool.

What has me in full-on fangirl squees, though, is the picture [info]melissa_writing  just faxed me. On page 18 of this week's Publishers Weekly, it has the Mass Market bestseller list, plus four authors highlights with their books covers and short bio blurbs on the side. ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE is one of those books highlighted on the side, right under Dean Koontz's latest paperback release of THE GOOD GUY.

*pause*

To appreciate why this sent me into rhapsodies, you'd have to know what a HUUUUUUUUGGGEEEEEEEE Dean Koontz fan I am. I've read him for over a decade, and the only thing I love more than his books is his story of how he broke into publishing. He's my literary idol among writers who are still alive today. To see my little book featured under something of his makes me want to squeal and burst into tears at the same time.

I will be buying this issue of Publishers Weekly, framing it, and hanging it on my wall.

Who would you most like to see a picture of your book under one day, if you could pick? Who's your (living :) literary idol?

That is way super duper cool, Jeaniene!
I'm not even a writer, but I could pretend I am and then maybe dream of seeing a picture of my book under Stephenie Meyer or J.K. Rowling. LOL I guess in my dreams, I'm probably a YA author, huh? ;)

You know come to Boston, and you'll practically walk into Stephen King. He keeps place nearby so he can do the Red Sox games. He's a season ticket holder.

I haven't read Gaiman yet (yes, I know, this makes me in the extreme minority) I have three of Gaiman's books and I've been meaning to get to them, because I hear he's awesome.

Ursula K. Le Guin or Elizabeth Moon. If I had to choose, Le Guin because I owe so much to her Earthsea it isn't even silly.

And that is utterly awesome news!

Jean M. Auel

I've been reading her books for over a decade, and am chomping at the bit for book 6 while salivating at the rumors of a 7th. Speaking of... I need to go look a few things up....

*heads off to fandom searches*
[info]frost_light wrote:

Oh, Auel is one of the first "adult" books I read as a kid. My mom bought me THE VALLEY OF HORSES when I was twelve because I loved horses and she thought it would be a good book for me. *grins* As you remember, that book wasn't about horses, but it got me hooked on adult novels :D

Congratulations Jeaniene! For me, it would definitely be JK Rowling. Her Harry Potter books have done so much for me, and given me so many friends and opened my eyes to so much, that it would be such an honor. She is definitely my living literary idol.

I remember a Koontz book called "Lightning" about time travelling Nazis. It had a lot of plot holes, but it sure was a fun ride. Sometimes I think I need to turn around my current reading habits and go back to learn how to build rollercoasters from him :)

Well, right now I'm pretty much amazed by Cormac McCarthy. I don't think I've ever been as amazed by a a single writer. If there were a way to study writing under him in person, I would do it (right now I content myself by tearing his writing apart line by line.) I guess he would be my choice for that picture you mention.

Congratulations on the best seller list, btw. I knew something was up. I was in B&N last night and your book was displayed prominently on the end caps, and I was like -- "Go, Frost, go!" :)

Hey you put a lot of hard work into those books! You definitely deserve it!

It's hard for me to choose just one. I'm staring at my book shelf now, trying to pick just one..give me a sec....(insert Jeopardy theme song here)....Okay, it's probably going to have to be Laurell K. Hamilton. Guilty Pleasures was the first ever Urban Fantasy book I picked up. Though I've read my entire life, UF is my obsession and it's all her fault! LOL

When I was a kid, I'd walk through the bookstores and fantasize about gazing on a shelf and seeing my name near Julian May's. (My husband argues that I was so difficult about changing my name because I never stopped wanting that.)

Now, I think if my mame were ever in print anywhere near Charles de Lint or Neil Gaiman I'd have to be rushed to the hospital. :-)

Just had to comment. First, my name is Jean. Second, THAT'S MY HARLEY on the cover!!! I ride an '03 Dyna Low Rider, with anniversary paint and the anniversary saddlebags! I can tell you about a few subtle differences in the front end and the seat, but that's my Ghwyenn on there!!!

Sorry to admit that I haven't read the novel yet, I'm saving it for vacation next week. But the Harley on the cover made me snatch it off the shelves.

Did you know that the passenger backrest style is called a tombstone? And that the jiffy stand is on the wrong side of the motorcycle? H-D puts them on the left. Dyna Low Riders don't do off-road well at all. I scrape going over a speed bump in a parking lot, Ghwyenn is so low, and I probably weigh less than Cat does... Why she took her H-D off the pavement is going to take some serious explaining.

Hi Jean. Hey, didn't know Cat had swiped your bike! ;-) Actually, the bike Bones and Cat ride in the book is a Ducati, but the art department thought a Harley was cooler for the cover.

Hope you like the book!
