Extended excerpt

  • Apr. 24th, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Since it's almost out (Tuesday, eeep!), I don't think my pub house will object, so I posted the entire first chapter of ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE on my website. What was up before was only about half of it.

So if you're interested, go here to check it out:  http://www.jeanienefrost.com/one-foot-in-the-grave.html

And while we're on the subject, I'm curious - do you like to read full chapters or excepts on an author's site before a book comes out? Or do you prefer to wait until you have the entire book before you start reading any of it?

I prefer to read excerpts, whether they're on the author's website or at the back of another book. The excerpts are like barometers of the forthcoming book and a little flag in the back of my brain, to look for the book.

I wait until I have the actual book. I'll drive myself crazy thinking of all of the possibilities if I read it before.

I prefer to wait until the book is in my hands. I even resist the temptation to read teaser chapters at the end of other books, because I hate reaching the end of them and knowing I have to wait x months for the rest of the story.

Tuesday, yay! :D

Either way it drives me crazy and I want to read the entire book :(

This is going to be one of the stay up how ever long it takes until you finish it books.

I quite like reading the first chapter in advance - increases the anticipation. ;)

And that's one helluva first chapter!!

I like first chapter excerpts and then generally something of a teasing taste to make me NEED to get the book if that helps.

I haven't read the chapter yet, but I guess I'd go that I prefer to read the book, but will cheat and read an excerpt or the first chapter online if it's available.

But reading on the computer just isn't desirable.

I like reading an excerpt many months before the book is due out. Then I like to read the first chapter in the last two months before it's in stores. Otherwise I drive myself crazy waiting for release day.

I'm still reading the book, silly work is getting in the way, but I love everything so far! I'd write more but I don't want to spoil anyone else. ♥

*grins* I love reading them even though it usually kills me because it makes me want the book now damn it! :D

For first-time authors I like to see the excerpt, to judge if I'm going to want it. For second and later books I don't go near them. I already know I want your book--why spoil it for myself?

*marking Tuesday on the calendar*

exactly what I was going to say. I think excerpts are a good gauge for authors that I am new to.

I prefer whole chapters, though no matter what I'm driven insane by the wait. :)

i find that excerpts are ok when i don't know the series but if I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment i prefer the whole book

I pick books based on colors of their covers. :D

Well, not entirely, but I am guilty of picking most of my books based on the image on the front or the name on the front. If I remember a name, I'll grab it. Otherwise, there are just too many books to read, and I can't afford them (I also don't let go of them either).

As for excerpts? Eh, not really sure. I don't read them. In fact, I avoid the excerpts in the backs of novels like the plague. I'm not really big on delay gratification and a five minute tease of an excerpt is just being cruel when I can't have the full book.

ello ello. i'm new, but my best friend got me your "Halfway to the Grave" for christmas. i've yet to read it but it's right up my alley.

anyway... i kinda prefer reading excerpts on authors sites because i don't want to be spoiled for sequels. an excerpt is always a way to get a taste of what's coming, but not get the entire picture. :D

I love excerpts, snippets or whatever else an author is willing to give me. I love reading sample chapters right before a book I've been waiting for is released.

Just about everyone I know loves the excerpts and first chapters, but I don't. The most I'll do is scan the back of a new author's book to get an general feeling for the story & whether I should try 'em. But for my Tried-and-True authors? I abstain. Otherwise I'll go nuts, having to wait for the book to come out, to find out what happens next!
BTW, after Halfway to the Grave, you became T-a-T, so I won't be visiting the chapter... I *will* however, be reading it on Tuesday! :)

I was so bummed. I thought the new book was out already (don't ask me how I got that in my head) and I was going to get it for my birthday. I went to the bookstore and asked about it...I was five days early. But, I'm saving my gift card to get it in a couple days - birthday delight delayed. :)

Oh, only if I'm in question of buying the book do I care about excerpts - and then I'd rather have a punchy scene than an entire chapter.
